Welcome to my blog on sewing machine stitchery. I have produced 3 tutorials that show you some simple but fun ways to use your sewing machine.

Crazy Patches is a variation on the crazy patchwork theme that has been handed down through the generations.

Mosaic is a modern version of crazy patchwork, using tiny pieces of fabric.

Reverse Applique is a variation on the theme of Reverse Appliqué. You may be familiar with the colourful reverse appliqués worked by Cuna Indian women.

Please read the introduction and before starting sections first.

Before starting

Always read the handbook for your sewing machine for instructions on how to clean it. Oil it, if the instructions advise. It is very important to keep fluff and dust out of its working parts. Keep a dust cover over your machine when it is not in use.

Your machine can be fitted with different kinds of feet. A standard presser foot can be used for straight stitch. An embroidery foot is best for zig zag stitch and other stitches. This foot has a rectangular ‘hole’ to allow movement of the needle from side to side. On the underside, there is a groove that enables the fabric and stitches to move freely under the embroidery foot. Some machines are equipped with an appliqué foot that is excellent to use. There is no bar to block your view of the stitches.
